Human Rights Watch says the US deportation of migrants to third-party African countries since Trump's 2025 return to office is unlawful and exploits suffering to deter migration. More than 500 people have been sent to African countries where they are not citizens, with some subsequently arbitrarily detained or returned to their home countries where they face risk of persecution or torture.
