Police intensify patrols during Easter long weekend

  1. Family learns of daughter's death from social media accident video

    The family of Diina Hamwaama (32), one of five people killed in a head-on motor accident between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo, discovered her death through a graphic video of the crash circulating on social media, six hours before police formally notified them. The family says they are traumatised by seeing her body in the video and are calling for respect for the dead and accountability from those who filmed and shared it.

  1. Two suspected suicides reported in Namibia's northern regions

    Police reported two suspected suicide cases over the weekend in northern Namibia: a 48-year-old man found dead at a farm in Kamanjab district on Friday following an argument with his daughter, and a 45-year-old man discovered in bushes near Tsumeb on Saturday. No foul play is suspected in either case.

  1. NamPol reports multiple drug arrests across Namibia

    The Namibian police force reported several drug-related arrests over the weekend, including suspects caught in possession and dealing of cannabis and mandrax tablets across towns including Lüderitz, Khorixas, Rehoboth, Kamanjab, Keetmanshoop, and Windhoek. NamPol spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi called on Namibians to partner with police to curb drug abuse and trafficking, which she described as a threat to youth, families, and communities.

  2. Angolan teenager escapes unpaid domestic labour in Oshikoto

    A 16-year-old Angolan girl has been rescued from unpaid domestic work in Namibia's Oshikoto region after being beaten and starved by her 62-year-old employer, who promised her N$500 monthly wages she never received. The suspect has been arrested and faces charges including contraventions of the Child Care and Protection Act, assault, and human trafficking.

  1. Oshikoto woman arrested for exploiting underage domestic worker

    A 62-year-old pensioner from Oshikoto region was arrested for allegedly employing a 16-year-old Angolan girl as a domestic worker, failing to feed her, assaulting her with a stick, and promising unpaid wages. The victim received treatment at a health centre and hospital, and the suspect faces charges including assault, child protection and labour law violations, and human trafficking offences.

  1. Officer involved in firearm incident appointed to protect vice president

    Police constable Benjamin Mutongolume, who was involved in a firearm discharge incident at Walvis Bay in September 2024, has been appointed as the official bodyguard to Vice President Lucia Witbooi by Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo. The officer was investigated for discharging a firearm within a municipal area and was given the option of paying a N$3,000 fine or serving six months' imprisonment, with the police stating the transfer was already in process prior to the incident.

  1. Armed robbery, smuggling, and deaths rock Kavango regions

    The Kavango regions experienced multiple serious incidents over the weekend: an armed home invasion in Rundu in which the homeowner was shot and one suspect was injured, a smuggling attempt at Rundu Police station involving contraband for inmates, and two deaths including a pensioner who drowned while fishing and a man whose body was recovered after going missing in February.

  2. Woman remanded in custody for brother-in-law killing

    Andrea Ferris appeared in Windhoek Magistrate's Court on Tuesday charged with the murder of Abre Maasdorp and attempted murder of her ex-husband Granville Maasdorp following a domestic altercation at Elisenheim. The court remanded her in custody and postponed the matter to 4 June while she applies for legal aid.
