“The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Namibia (AOPA) last week objected to the proposed restriction, saying that if successful, the proposed change could have serious consequences for the country's aviation industry.”
Namibia's aircraft operators say restrictive visa and work permit processes are constraining pilot availability, threatening aviation safety and tourism. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association notes that Namibia's pilot pool is exhausted, with only 2% of recent pilot job applicants being Namibian nationals, and calls for the Home Affairs ministry to expedite work permits for qualified foreign commercial pilots and flight instructors.
Namibia faces a critical shortage of pilots and flight instructors, with only 202 commercial pilot licence holders but a need for at least 60 additional commercial pilots and 14 flight instructors, according to a white paper by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. The shortage has forced aircraft carriers to ground up to 45% of their fleet, jeopardizing the tourism industry that depends on aviation to connect remote lodges and communities.
The Namibian Defence Force confirmed a proposal to reclassify a military operations area (FYM-401) in Erongo to prohibited airspace, citing international aviation standards. A 25 March meeting will convene aviation authorities and stakeholders to discuss the proposal, which has drawn opposition from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association over concerns about impacts on aviation, tourism, and mining drone operations.
The Namibian Defence Force says its proposal to reclassify the FYM 401 airspace in Erongo as restricted follows international aviation standards and is under review by the National Airspace Committee. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has objected, warning the change could disrupt flight routes and harm sectors including tourism, mining, and rural services that depend on aviation.
