Africa warned to prepare for powerful El Niño event
A potentially strong El Niño is expected to strengthen, with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration placing a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter of 2026/27, prompting calls for African governments to prepare for impacts on food security, water supplies, public health and electricity generation. Southern Africa faces increased risk of drought and extreme heat, while parts of East Africa could experience above-normal rainfall and flooding.
