Namra collects N$1.1 billion through compliance and legal action

The News

The Namibia Revenue Agency collected N$500 million in three months through a compliance initiative and recovered a further N$622 million through legal action against non-compliant taxpayers, winning 14 of 15 cases. The agency also recovered N$171 million from VAT fraud and intercepted N$67 million in drug-related cases as part of its push to meet its revised revenue target of N$88 billion.

  1. Namra enforces tax compliance in betting and gambling sector

    The Namibia Revenue Agency has signed a cooperation agreement with the Gambling Board to access data on operators and winners to close compliance gaps and ensure betting and gambling income is properly taxed. Namra commissioner Sam Shivute says the authority will cross-check gambling board data against tax records to identify non-compliance and is calling on operators and individuals to voluntarily regularise their tax affairs.

    Vickson 'Loco' Shivute, a 26-year-old forward for KK Palace FC, shares the surname of Namibian football pioneer Elifas Shivute and is determined to carve his own place in the game's history.     Namibia's Revenue Agency has warned that mineral and petroleum licence transfers are subject to Namibian tax even when conducted abroad, with only 5% of companies currently complying. A tax amnesty expires in October, but industry representatives have raised concerns that the current tax regime discourages investment.

  1. Dippenaar seeks Supreme Court review of murder conviction

    Jandre Dippenaar, convicted of six counts of murder stemming from a 2014 car accident near Henties Bay that killed six people, has lodged an application to appeal to the Supreme Court after the High Court dismissed his earlier appeal in December. Dippenaar was the first in Namibia convicted of murder based on dolus eventualis rather than culpable homicide in a motor vehicle collision case; he argued the court wrongly prioritised eyewitness testimony over expert evidence, but judges ruled the trial court correctly drew inferences and imposed an appropriate sentence.

  1. NamRA and state organs sign border coordination framework

    The Namibia Revenue Agency and key state institutions have signed the Inter-Agency Standard Operations Framework for Coordinated Border Management to improve coordination at Namibia's borders, reduce delays in goods movement, and strengthen infrastructure and security. NamRA Commissioner Sam Shivute emphasised the need for effective implementation of initiatives like one-stop border posts and coordinated controls to support economic growth.

  1. Magistrates testify Avis Dam murder confessions were voluntary

    Two magistrates testified in the Windhoek High Court that two men accused of robbing and murdering a resident at Avis Dam in July 2020 voluntarily made confessions after their arrests, with neither man reporting threats or coercion when statements were recorded in November 2020.

    Auditor General Junias Kandjeke has found serious weaknesses in how the Ministry of Industrialisation, Mines and Energy and the Namibia Revenue Agency verify and collect royalties and taxes from gold mining, citing gaps in risk management, production verification and tax auditing that expose the state to potential revenue losses from one of its most valuable mineral resources.

  2. Gobabis deputy mayor expelled by party foundation

    The Right to Shelter Foundation of Namibia has expelled deputy mayor Dina Fillemon from the party with effect from 5 February, citing an erroneous entry of her name in the Electoral Commission system during her swearing-in. By operation of law, Fillemon automatically lost her council seat and deputy mayor position upon her expulsion from the foundation that held her mandate.

  1. Walvis Bay stepfather sentenced 30 years for murdering five-year-old

    Riddick Narib was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for the brutal murder of his five-year-old stepson Dantali Eiseb in Walvis Bay in January 2023. Narib admitted to repeatedly striking the boy with a brick and cutting him with a knife, and told the court he committed the act to hurt the boy's mother, with whom he was in a failed marriage.
