Brandon McNulty, 28, became the first American man to win the UCI road race world championship in 33 years, breaking clear with 32km remaining in Montreal and holding off Michael Matthews and Mathieu van der Poel to win by 13 seconds. McNulty said he did not believe he could win until the final 100 metres, describing the victory as a "miracle."
